Understanding The Value

This business understands the value in a descriptive and brandable domain name. In July of 2013, Toronto Endodontist Dr. Rita Kilislian, purchased the premium domain name RootCanals.com for $12,000 and redirected it to her business website.

Root canals are one of the most common dental procedures with over 14 million performed every year around the world. One Endodontist owns the name and is capturing all of the leads.

Can you imagine the amount of business the office will do from a $12,000 investment! Can you see the potential for your business?

Virtual Real Estate
There are many similarities between traditional real estate and virtual real estate. Virtual real estate is a web property, basically the domain name and a website. The domain name is the equivalent to a vacant lot, with the website being the building constructed on the lot.

"Domain Names are the real estate of the 21st century" Steve Forbes

In real estate 101 you learn there are a lot of different factors that determine the value of a piece of property. Location and highest and best use of a property are both key factors in the valuation process.

A web property is no different. The location is the domain name and the extent to which the website is developed determine if it is the highest and best use of that domain name. Small business websites can be developed into highly profitable web properties.

If you were to open a storefront to sell your products in the offline world you would want a good location with a decent amount of foot and street traffic. Contact a commercial Realtor in your town and I bet they can give you traffic counts for all of the major streets in your town.

It's no different on the internet. Why settle for a domain name that has little or no chance of driving traffic to your website? Remember your domain name is your location! A good domain has the potential to leverage a small amount of traffic into a highly profitable web property.

Choosing the wrong name is the equivalent of opening your offline store on a dead end street with no traffic. You wouldn't do it in the offline world, why do it in the online world?

Branding Domain Names
The purchase, development and marketing of descriptive domain names to promote a business or product is the ultimate gorilla marketing tool.

A memorable domain name instantly attracts your target audience and is a major advantage in establishing both your online and offline identity. Imagine your business being synonymous with the products or service you sell.

Over 80% of all online transactions begin with a keyword search.

Today internet users are accustomed to typing search phrases to find the products and services they are looking for. If it is a local search, the vast majority type the city name first and then the product or service.

Remember: People are looking for a solution to their problem at hand, not you specifically.

When descriptive domains are branded properly, the name is registered into the subconscious mind and will be top of mind when the product or service is needed.

Descriptive Branded Domain Names
Here is a small sample of major corporations using descriptive, branded domain names to sell their products and services. As you can see, descriptive domain names work for all types of businesses, from Alzheimers Disease to the Weather Channel and every product or service in-between!

AlzheimersDisease.com (Novartis Pharmaceuticals)
Asthma.com (GlaxoSmithKline)
Books.com (Barnes and Noble)
ContactLenses.com (1 800 Contacts)
Flowers.com (1800 Flowers)
AutoRental.com (Avis Budget)
Hunting.com (Bass Pro Shops)
RentalCar.com (Enterprise Rent-A-Car)
Florist.com (FTD)
Motorcycles.com (Honda)
TennisShoes.com (K-Swiss)
LifeInsurance.com (Northwestern Mutual)
OfficeSupplies.com (Office Depot)
DogFood.com (PetSmart)
Toys.com (Toys R' Us)
Trailer.com (U-Haul)
Heartburn.com (Tums)
Weather.com (Weather Channel)

As Seen on TV!
Turn your DVR off for an evening and watch some television commercials. You wil experience first hand how local and national advertisers are using descriptive domain names to advertise their products and services. I've listed a few examples below.

GlaxoSmithKline
Asthma.com is a perfect example of a company using a branded domain name instead of their business name. Asthma.com is owned by pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline. Asthma.com is very descriptive and a lot easier to remember than GlaxoSmithKline.com

BMW
The premium automobile manufacturer BMW is using a global branding campaign to market their Mini brand featuring unconventional, high-energy television commercials. The slogan and domain name is: MiniNotNormal.com

Nationwide Insurance
Nationwide Insurance is using a national media campaign to brand the advertising slogan: JoinTheNation.com

American Standard
BeComfortableNow.com is another advertising slogan being used in a national advertising campaign. American Standard is using the slogan to promote their nationwide heating and air conditioning dealer network.

AstraZeneca
AstraZeneca is another pharmaceutical company using branded domain names. PurplePill.com is to market their heartburn and acid reflux medicine Nexium. Guess what? Nexium is a Purple Pill!

You
Can you imagine the possibilities for your business? Major corporations are using branded domain names to sell their products and services, on the national level. Why not copy their success and do the same on the local level!

Direct Navigation
Direct navigation or type-in traffic, as it's sometimes called, is when a visitor know's what they want and bypasses the search engines by typing the domain name directly into their browser's address bar.

For this reason, direct navigation traffic is every marketers dream. A visitor that know's what they want is extremely targeted and converts at a higher rate than traditional search traffic.

Direct navigation has been in existence since the beginning of the internet and accounts for between 5% to 20% of all internet traffic.

This number is increasing as internet users are becoming more internet savy, are concerned about privacy issues and the increasing use of mobile devices.

It's much easier, more deep-rooted and more effective to brand your domain name to get quality direct navigation traffic than it is to manipulate the search engines to get a page one ranking.

Imagine never being at the mercy of search engine quirks again!

Google Doesn't Care About You!
The fact is, the business model of all of the major search engines is to provide search results that are relevant to a users search. It makes no difference to them if the result is you or one of your competitors.

No one cares about your business like you do!

For a local business to get quality traffic from the search engines you need to be listed in the local listings or at least on page one of the search results pages.

Good luck with that. The search engines are constantly changing their search criteria making website owners jump through hoops to stay ranked.

I'm sure you are bombarded with offers by search engine professionals promising to get you ranked on page one! They may be able to get you ranked, but staying on page one is increasingly harder.

To add insult to the injury, Google allocates less than 15% of a search result page, above the fold, to non-paid search results. You scratch and claw your way to the top for 15% exposure?

If you want more exposure on the search results page you can always buy advertising. On Google about 30% of the page above the fold, or double the space of organic listings, is allocated to paid advertising. Are you being Scroogled?

Doesn't it make more sense to own your traffic?
